Month Theme: The Anointing
Topic: The Anointing on Moses’s Rod
Scripture Reading: Exodus 4:10-20; Acts 10:30-40
Main Text:
Exodus 4:17
17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.
God is sovereign. We cannot explain why God did not use Moses’ knife as the instrument of power but his rod to work miracles. The rod of Moses was not a mere symbol of God’s power. It was more than that – IT WAS THE ROD OF GOD (Exodus 4:17-20). The simplicity of the anointing lies in the fact that God used Moses’ rod to work miracles and neither he nor the people he ministered to engaged in endless debate about it.
Your Rod could be anything God chooses to use in your life for His miracles – a rod, oil, garments, water, the spoken word, communion etc. The rod represented:
1. Sign - Moses’s Rod turned into a serpent (Exodus 4:2-4). It was a sign of the power of God.
2. Supply - He used his rod to bring water from the rock in Horeb (Exodus 17:5-7) and in Kadesh (Numbers 20:8-13).
3. Supremacy - Moses used his rod to help the Israelites win the war against the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8-15).
There were other prophets in the Bible in whose lives and ministries God did not use a rod or any other symbol of the anointing. Simplicity implies that we should allow God to do what He wants to do. Just as God chose to use Moses’ rod, He directs the use of the anointing oil in some cases and mantles in other situations.
Prayer: Pray that God will use what you have in your hands to work a miracle for you.
