Topic: FAITH LOOKS AT THE UNSEEN
THEME SCRIPTURE:
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NKJV)
[17] For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, [18] while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
MESSAGE:
We established in our previous devotion, that, faith does not deny the facts of a matter; rather, faith uses the truth of God’s Word to change the facts of that matter.
“How does that happen?”One may ask. The verse 18 of our theme Scripture reveals how faith uses the truth of God’s Word to change the facts of a situation. It says, “while we do not look at the things which are seen...” This phrase is from a Greek word which also means, “while we DO NOT CONSIDER the things which are seen.” The things which are seen have to do with what our senses can perceive; the things we see, hear, smell, taste and touch. What this means is that, faith does not consider the things within the realm of our physical senses; it does not deny the facts perceived by our physical senses, but at the same time, it does not give the facts on the ground any attention. It’s like saying, “I’ve seen it but I haven’t seen it.” In other words, “I’ve seen it, but I do not give it attention.”
The continuation of the verse 18 reveals how faith is able to do this. It says, “while we do not look at the things which are seen, BUT AT THE THINGS WHICH ARE NOT SEEN.” In other words, faith looks at the unseen, which is the Word of God. Based on the Word of God, you must be able to derive and embody a clear picture in your mind, and keep your gaze and attention on that picture, regardless of whatever your senses may be perceiving. The Word of God is the reason why faith has the audacity not to consider the things perceived by our physical senses. The last line of the verse 18 says, “For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
The summary is this: Faith does not give attention to what our senses perceive, because, the things within the realm of the senses are temporary; that is, they have a beginning, and also have an end. But the Word of God is eternal; it has no expiry date. Therefore, faith looks at the unseen, and uses the unseen Word of God to change what is seen in our physical circumstances.
