Month Theme: Reaping in the Jubilee
Topic: Bring the poor into your house
Scripture Reading: Luke 4:16-21
Main Text: Isaiah 58:5-7;
Luke 4:19
To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Feeding people during the Jubilee was not enough. The Israelites were to go further and provide accommodation for the homeless. By the time of the Jubilee, some individuals had lost their homes and lands. It was the responsibility of those who had shelter to ensure that such displaced people had homes to live in. When we bring the poor into our homes, we give them Rest, Refreshing and Restoration.
1. Rest
Rest is cessation of labour and pain. “Fear not” – servants were in constant fear that they could be abused, sold or even killed. Mephibosheth thought of himself as a servant, but David told him not to fear.
1. Refreshing
Rest is cessation of labour but refreshing is the bestowal of favour, kindness, grace, goodness and mercy. Refreshing is usually spiritual or psychological – peace, joy, health and righteousness.
2. Restoration
Restoration is the return of everything that once belonged to us. It is divine compensation for our pain and servitude. Restoration is often social (honour), material and financial.
An additional feature of the Jubilee is the provision of spiritual homes for those who don’t have them. The apostle Paul admonished the believers to do good to those who were in the household of faith. The household of faith is the most comfortable home to belong to. In this Jubilee age, we must overcome our personal challenges and do good to all men without getting weary. Galatians 6:9-10
Prayer: Pray for yourself that you'll receive the grace to build and to bring the poor into your house.
