Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: Remember Them that are in Bonds
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:1-9
Main Text:
John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
In Hebrews 13:3 the author admonished the Hebrews to remember the believers who were in bonds. These believers were thrown into prison for their faith. Persecution coupled with the imprisonment of the saints could easily threaten the bond of love amongst the brethren. This compelled the writer to urge them to let brotherly love continue.
In many parts of the world life-threatening forms of persecution still persist – people are killed, imprisoned, poisoned, thrown to wild beasts and ostracised from society. In other parts of the world more subtle forms of persecution take place. It is gross ignorance to think that there are believers anywhere on earth who are not going through any form of persecution.
In some places the saints are thrown out of their worship places, development plans of cities are designed to favour other religions, the press is used to destroy the testimony of churches and pastors and laws are formulated to deny the Church expression in issues that matter to us. Just like the members of the early Church were scattered through persecution, there are believers in many places who cannot fellowship together or even profess their faith (Acts 8:1-4; 11:19-20). When our brethren are in bondage, we all are in bondage (Hebrews 13:3). We must feel their pain and shame, and trust God for their liberty.
Prayer: Pray for somebody who is in some form of bond, and demand his or her liberty. Pray for Christians who are being persecuted.
