Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: The Bondage of Our Time
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:1-9
Main Text:
John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
The apostle urged the believers to let brotherly love continue (Hebrews 13:1-3). The author admonished the believers to remember the believers who were in bonds. In many parts of the world life-threatening forms of bondage persist – people are killed, imprisoned, poisoned, thrown to wild beasts and ostracized from society. In other parts of the world more subtle forms of persecution take place. In situations where persecution and imprisonments persist, many things happen to break down the unity amongst the brethren.
We betray one another for what we can get. It is common to see believers betray one another for what they can get. Persecution provides good business for the perverted ones amongst us. Judas Iscariot took advantage of the Jews’ hatred for Jesus and sold Him for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). Some are quick to neglect those in bonds. Believers are unwilling to visit those that are in bonds or persecuted for the fear of being associated with them. We neglect visiting the saints in prison and pretend to be busy preaching the Gospel in our own comfort zones.
To be in bonds is to be in pain and to be restricted. There are many spiritual, physical and mental restrictions we are subjected to. Some churches and even marriages are prisons. Injustice and torture take many forms. Besides believers who are in bonds, we have to reach out to prisoners in general. Even the unbelieving in prison need our love. There are countless testimonies of people who were saved while in prison and came out to make impact in the body of Christ.
Prayer: Pray for the grace and capacity to relieve those in bonds of their pain, or even free them.
