Topic: THE PRIMARY REASON FOR MARRIAGE
THEME SCRIPTURE:
Genesis 2:18 (NIV)
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
MESSAGE:
Our theme Scripture reveals the mind of God for making a suitable helper for Adam. He said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” Once we grasp what God intended to achieve by giving Adam a suitable helper, we will be able to appreciate the primary reason for marriage.
“Aloneness” is not the same as “loneliness.” “Alone” means, “all-in-one.” Adam was not lonely; he was all in one. The rib God removed from Adam to form Eve was initially in Adam; so Adam was “Himself plus Eve, all in one.” But when God formed Eve out of that rib, they became two; because two are better than one. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NKJV), says,
“[9] Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
[10] For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.
[11] Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?
[12]Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
It’s beautiful when Scripture answers Scripture! From the above Scripture, it’s obvious that God made two out of one because the two have a good reward for their labour. Meaning, Adam needed a companion who was suitable to help him have greater results than he would have achieved as a single individual. Adam had a purpose for living and that’s why God gave him a helper suitable for him to achieve that purpose.
A man should not look for a wife because he feels lonely! If there’s no purpose for living, one can be married and still be lonely. A man should look for a wife because he needs a companion to help him achieve a purpose. Therefore, marriage is primarily for companionship, for purposeful living.
