Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
MESSAGE:
Our theme Scripture is an explicit instruction to believers who claim to have “fallen in love” with unbelievers.
An unbeliever is someone who doesn’t believe, or hasn’t yet believed that Jesus is the Saviour of humankind. That person hasn’t confessed the Lordship of Jesus, hence, he/she is still under the lordship of Satan.
What we haven’t been drumming home is that, sin is the nature of the devil. So long as a person hasn’t received remission of sins, what that person looks like in his/her spirit, is what the leper looks like in his/her body. The unbeliever hasn’t received remission of sins; Satan, therefore, has direct ownership of such a soul unbeknown to him/her. Once the unbeliever possesses the nature of Satan, he/she is under the lordship of Satan. Thus, a believer marrying an unbeliever is a mismatch; it is the joining together of a man and a woman who have two different lords. The Bible calls it, unequal yoke. A yoke is a wooden bar or frame by which two draft animals (such as oxen) are joined at the heads or necks for working together. For two oxen to be yoked so that they work together effectively, they must have commensurate height and thickness of neck. Any difference in height or thickness of the neck of one from the other, will make the yoke unequal.
This analogy is used by the Spirit of God, to portray the difference between a believer and an unbeliever. Joining a believer to an unbeliever in marriage is an unequal yoke. It doesn’t matter how kind or nice that unbeliever is, a decorated pig, is still a pig! There’s no fellowship between righteousness and unrighteousness. There’s no communion between light and darkness.
Any believer contemplating getting married to an unbeliever should hear this: don’t start what you cannot continue. If God calls marriage between a believer and an unbeliever unequal yoke, it simply means, that unbeliever is not your equal.
