Topic: RESPONSIBILITIES OF HUSBAND AND WIFE
THEME SCRIPTURE:
Ephesians 5:30-33 (KJV)
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. [31] For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. [32] This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. [33] Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
MESSAGE:
How will it look like, if a husband loves his wife, the same way he loves himself? It would mean, whatever he wishes for himself, he will do same for his wife! Again, can you imagine in that same marital union where the wife gives reverence to her husband? To revere someone is to regard as worthy of great honour or show respect to the person.
This is the picture our theme Scripture seeks to paint. The home is expected to be a place of love and respect. And where there is love and respect, there is mutual support for each other.
The concept of marriage is for husband and wife to yield greater results than they would have achieved as single individuals. Ecclesiastes 4:9 (KJV) says, “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.”
Marriage is not a competition between husband and wife; it is for both couple to complement each other’s efforts to develop synergy. Marriage thrives on a a win-win concept. If the husband wins, it is the wife who has won! Likewise, if the wife wins, it is the husband who has won! If that is that case, then what will you spell out as the responsibility of the husband that the wife wouldn’t support to achieve? What will you spell out as the responsibility of the wife that the husband wouldn’t support to achieve? Responsibility simply means, giving response to your ability. If you have the ability to bring progress to the marriage and home but you refuse to give response to that ability, that is irresponsibility!
When a husband knows he is bound to love his wife, and the wife knows she is bound to submit to her husband, their responsibilities towards each other and the upkeep of the home will evolve naturally without anyone giving a set of rules. Thus, responsibilities of husband and wife will differ from one marriage to the other, and from home to home; but the bottomline is that, for a couple who seek to honour God’s Word as our theme Scripture instructs, there will always be mutual efforts from both of them to achieve a common goal.
