Month Theme: Supernaturality
Topic: The Experience of Water Baptism
Scripture Reading: Romans 6:1-10
Main Text:
Romans 6:3
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Water baptism is the physical immersion of new believers in water as a symbol of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3-4). Baptism illustrates the newness of life of the believer. Water baptism, though physical to our natural senses, has supernatural effect. Baptism symbolises a spiritual process of dying to the self and living in Christ.
During Jesus Christ’s baptism, the heavens were opened and the Holy Ghost descended upon Him like of a dove (Matthew 3:16-17). A supernatural display of God’s presence was manifested at the baptism when the Holy Ghost descended upon Jesus Christ, and God the Father spoke from Heaven. The early apostles prioritised the practice of water baptism. The apostle Peter baptised the household of Cornelius after the Holy Ghost spontaneously fell on them while he was preaching the Gospel to them (Acts 10:44-48). The preaching of the Gospel, falling of the Holy Ghost upon the audience and the act of water baptism combined to produce an explosive atmosphere in Cornelius’ house.
In many places today, water baptism has been reduced to solemn ceremonies which have no power demonstration. Water baptism is a spiritual exercise with power. The activity of the Holy Ghost during water baptism, makes water baptism even more explosive.
Prayer:
Thank God for the gift of salvation.
