Month Theme: Release
Topic: The Acceptable Year
Scripture Reading: Leviticus 25:8-13
Main Text:
Luke 4:18-19
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
We mentioned yesterday in our devotional, that the word “acceptable” in Luke 4:18-19 is the Greek word ‘dektos’ which means acceptable, approved or propitious (favourable, promising, advantageous, bright). The acceptable year in the above scripture reference could refer to the year of Jubilee in which there was a compulsory release of all slaves and people’s properties which were in the custody of others. Slaves and those who were indebted to others looked forward to the Jubilee year.
Three things feature in the acceptable year:
1. Rulership - The acceptable year of the Lord is the blessed year which belongs to Jehovah. It is the Messianic period of blessing characterised by theocratic rule (Daniel 4:17). The enemy and those who wish evil for us are not in charge of your life and blessing. God is in charge, and He is on our side.
2. Return - In the acceptable year of the Lord, God approves our unconditional release from bondage and return to our possession (Isaiah 51:11). Our possessions are preserved and we’re returning to it.
3. Refreshing - The acceptable year is the propitious year of the Lord in which we are ushered into favourable (propitious) conditions of peace and rest (Psalm 126:1-3).
Prayer: Declare that this is your acceptable year.
