Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: The Agape Test
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 11:6-9
Main Text:
John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Jesus commanded His disciples to love one another (John 13:34-35). We are to love one another as Christ loves us. Our love for one another is supposed to measure up to the love Christ has for us and not less. It is through loving one another that people will know that we are the disciples of Christ. Our love for one another defines us.
We must endeavour to let brotherly love continue. In Hebrews 13 the Bible shows us some of the obstacles we must overcome to let brotherly love continue. The verses after the first one mention certain situations that require a demonstration of the love of God (Hebrews 13:1-3). We are required to extend love to strangers, show love towards the bound, and demonstrate same in the lives of those who are going through diverse adversities.
The challenges that faced the Church in Paul’s days reveal the need for love. These challenges presented good excuses for people not to walk in love. The excuses notwithstanding, the apostle Paul still urged them to walk in love. We have our fair share of challenges in our day. Stories of betrayals, armed robberies, etc. have made it difficult for people to show others love. Nevertheless, we must remember our standard for showing love - Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Pray that you will receive grace to not fall short of the agape love.
