Month Theme: The Anointing
Topic: Symbol Idolatry and the Anointing
Scripture Reading: Exodus 4:10-20; Acts 10:30-40
Main Text:
Exodus 4:17
And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.
When a symbol of the anointing, for example the mantle or the anointing oil are taken from common use and assigned to spiritual purposes, they become avenues for the transmission of spiritual power. Overdependence on the symbols of the Holy Ghost leads to symbol idolatry – when we cease fellowshipping with the Holy Ghost and merely engage in applying symbols and tokens.
There is a great need to emphasise knowing the Holy Ghost and fellowshipping with Him (John 14:16-17). The Holy Ghost has supremacy over any symbol or token of the anointing or Holy Ghost.
1. Comforter - The Holy Ghost is the comforter just like Jesus Christ. The word comforter in the above scripture reference is the Greek word, paraklÄ“tos meaning an intercessor, consoler, advocate, strengthener and helper. Symbols or tokens are not the comforter. They have no feeling and they can’t speak.
2. Continuation - The Holy Ghost is eternal. His mission and presence is the continuation of Jesus Christ’s life on earth. He abides with us forever. Symbols and tokens don’t last forever.
3. Confidentiality - The dealing of the Holy Ghost with believers is confidential. The world or unbelievers cannot duplicate or imitate the person or presence of the Holy Ghost though they can duplicate symbols and tokens.
The most important thing in the believer’s life is to be led into all truth – miracles and blessings are secondary. The mission of the Holy Ghost on earth is to reveal the truth to us (John 16:12-13).
Prayer: Pray that God will use what you have in your hands to work a miracle for you.
