Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: Entertaining Strangers
Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 4:1-34; Genesis 18:1-33
Main Text:
John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
There are several factors that militate against love. For brotherly love to continue believers must overcome the love killers amongst us (Hebrews 13:1-2). We must overcome the fear of our negative experiences and stories told us, if we will walk in love. Strangers entered homes and betrayed the love of their hosts, making it difficult for the victims to love again. People have made it almost impossible for their spouses to trust again. These experiences and stories are love killers we must overcome.
The Bible enjoins us not to forget to entertain strangers. This admonition refers to travellers or missionaries who were sent on assignment. The apostle Paul cited a biblical precedent of some people receiving angels unawares. This exhortation might have been about the Jewish story of how Abraham received three visitors, at least two of whom turned out to be angels (Genesis 18:1-3).
Some strangers are carriers of genuine anointings and we need them in our lives. The Shunammite woman compelled Elisha into her home and she received a miracle son and other blessings (2 Kings 4:8-9). Failing to entertain a stranger who carries your blessing means you have failed to receive your blessing. We must believe God to be discerning enough to entertain strangers.
Prayer: Pray that the grace to discern will replace any spirit of fear around you, as you seek to entertain strangers.
