Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: Choose the Mantle 2
Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 2:1-14; Hebrews 13:1-9
Main Text:
Hebrews 13:5
5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
As mentioned in the part 1 of this topic, for brotherly love to continue we must get rid of covetousness (13:1, 5). If we love God and others, we don’t covet their blessings but focus on our spiritual blessings and the gifts of God. The blessings of others separate us from them and we must not be covetous. The chariot of fire and wind separated Elijah from Elisha. Elisha did not go to heaven with Elijah (2 Kings 2:11).
Elisha grabbed the mantle instead of following Elijah into the chariot of fire and wind (2 Kings 2:13-14). He did not bemoan his condition but was content with the mantle. Certain things are not meant for us, and we should not push ourselves, out of envy or covetousness, into getting them. Let's be happy for those who have them, and believe God for what belongs to us. Don't follow a spiritual leader with the sole purpose of receiving material gain. Choose the Spirit or mantle instead of the flesh, earthly blessings or even someone’s spiritual blessings.
The mantle in 2 Kings 2:14 represents:
1• The Purpose
- A mantle is a purpose. It is not for showmanship. Elisha continued with God’s agenda from the place where Elijah left off. Gehazi, however, could not continue the agenda because he despised the mantle (2 Kings 5:20-27).
2• The Power
- The supernatural ability of God flowing through a man to change situations. The agenda of God is accompanied by the power to execute the mandate. What God has purposed for you to accomplish, He will empower you to execute. If we are not faithful with that which is another man’s, God will not give us that which is our own (Luke 16:12).
Prayer: ask the Holy Ghost to guide you in every choice you make.
