Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: Choose the Mantle 1
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:11-20; Hebrews 13:1-9
Main Text:
Hebrews 13:5
5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Covetousness is a strong desire after the possession of worldly things. The stronger version of covetousness is avarice which is extreme greed for wealth or material gain. If “philadelphia” is to continue amongst us we must eschew covetousness (Hebrews 13:1-5). Love is a giver and covetousness is a grabber. It is impossible to combine these two in one’s life. Until we learn to be content with what we have, we cannot love the brethren.
In the episode concerning Elijah and Elisha, the chariot of fire and wind separated Elijah from Elisha. Elisha did not go to heaven with Elijah (2 Kings 2:11). Elijah went into the heavenly REALM but Elisha was not envious. Aaron and Miriam, on the other hand, were envious of God speaking to Moses, and attracted God's displeasure. Secondly, Elijah entered his REST but Elisha had to return and labour. Someone’s comfort, prosperity and commendation should not make you envious.
For brotherly love to continue we must get rid of covetousness. If we love God and others, we don’t covet their blessings but focus on our spiritual blessings and the gifts of God. The blessings of others separate us from them and we must not be covetous.
Prayer: ask the Holy Ghost to guide you in every choice you make.
