Topic: THE BELIEVER’S ULTIMATE CALLING
THEME SCRIPTURE:
John 7:38-39 (KJV)
[38] He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. [39] (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given ; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
MESSAGE:
It is not enough to believe the gospel and confess the Lordship of Jesus; the believer in Christ is called into partnership with the Holy Spirit. This is our higher calling in Christ Jesus.
In our previous devotion, we learnt that, prayer is an avenue by which the Holy Spirit gains room through us, and expresses Himself to others. It is in this same vein, that our theme Scripture today, narrates how Jesus addresses those who believe in Him; out of the belly of the believer shall flow rivers of living water. And the verse 39 says, Jesus was referring to the Holy Spirit.
This buttresses the fact that, the believer’s ultimate calling is to become an avenue through whom the Holy Spirit expresses Himself to others. The Holy Spirit is to flow through us as RIVERS OF LIVING WATER. Scripture never gave us the number of rivers; there could be as many rivers as the issues may be; and even more, because God does exceedingly, abundantly, above all the we ask or think, according to the power that works in us (Ephesians 3:20). Secondly, the Holy Spirit does not only express Himself through us as rivers, but as rivers of LIVING WATER. Meaning, wherever the rivers flow, there’s impartation of life.
In summary, through the believer, the Holy Spirit gives and imparts life; and we learnt from our previous devotion that prayer supplies the Spirit. That means, we become partners with the Holy Spirit whenever we engage Him in communion, and through us, He imparts life. This is the ultimate aim for prayer, and this is the believer’s ultimate calling in Christ Jesus.
