Month Theme: The Sons of Oil
Topic: Sons of Thunder
Scripture Reading: Luke 9:46-56
Main Text:
Mark 3:17
17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons (huios) of thunder:
The apostles James and John were called the sons of thunder apparently because of their fiery enthusiasm and confrontational nature. On one occasion, arguably led by John, the disciples stopped some people who were casting out demons in the name of Jesus, because the people were not part of their “group” (Mark 9:38). At another time, led by their mother, the sons of thunder desired of Jesus that they will sit next to Him in heaven (Matthew 20:20-23; Mark 10:35-40).
The Sons of Thunder are not the “everyday nice Christian”. They are not the kind of believers who sit and cry when faced with challenges. The Sons of Thunder know what they want, and go for it. They also know what they don’t want, and resist it. They push and fight to fulfil the agenda of God for their lives (Matthew 11:12). On one occasion, the sons of thunder threatened to command fire from Heaven upon Samaria because the people did not receive Jesus Christ in the appropriate manner (Luke 9:51-56).
It is good to have the Sons of Consolation and the Sons of Peace in the Body of Christ, but without the Sons of Thunder, the Body will not be complete. The Sons of Thunder are not evil people; they are people consumed by God’s purpose. John the Baptist was confrontational and fiery yet Jesus Christ said there was no prophet born of woman, greater than John (Luke 7:28). Jesus Christ also operated as a Son of Thunder, at some point in His ministry when He addressed people, including Herod, with strong words (Luke 13:31-33). He, on one occasion, made a whip and chased out moneychangers and other people engaged in undesirable practices in the temple (John 2:13-16). We must believe God for a few Sons of Thunder in the Body of Christ, who will boldly stand for what is right, and fight against what is wrong.
Prayer: Pray for the strength and resilience to stand for what is right, and against what is wrong.
