Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: Discern
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:1-9
Main Text:
John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
The Bible enjoins us not to forget to entertain strangers (Hebrews 13:2). Some people might have abused the privilege of being hosted by others. It is not unusual to receive charlatans and pretenders into your home. Acts of deceit, stealing, fraud and dishonesty are rampant in homes and churches. The havoc caused by some visitors is so much that many well meaning believers and churches are not ready to receive visitors into their homes. The writer of Hebrews however, admonished the Church that in spite of such despicable acts by some unscrupulous elements, brotherly love had to continue.
We shall be called upon to entertain people we don’t know too well. To do this we must have the discernment to receive people by the spirit. Nabal refused to receive David because he did not have the spiritual capacity to recognise the next king of Israel who was trapped in the wilderness (1 Samuel 25:9-11). Love takes us beyond the familiar and makes us believe good things about people who are complete strangers to us.
We are to walk in love but there are spiritual ways to know the kind of people to receive (2 John 1:10-11). Every visitor we receive must have a credible point of reference. Look out for whether you have peace in your heart or not. Don’t hoard dubious characters in your home in the name of love. If we don’t know the strangers at all and there is no way of checking on them, we should put them up in hotels. No matter the situation we find ourselves in, however, we should avoid treating strangers with contempt.
Prayer: Pray that the Lord will touch your spiritual senses, and quicken you to be more discerning in your dealings with people.
