Month Theme: Settlement
Topic: Dedication of Buildings
Scripture Reading: Genesis 11:1-9
Main Text:
Genesis 11:4
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
It is consistent with human nature to settle in places. King Solomon extended this attribute to God by building Him a settled place (1 Kings 8:12-13). The descendants of Noah demonstrated the propensity of humankind to settle by building the city of Babel. the people travelled and settled in a plain of land called Shinar which was later referred to as Chaldaea or Babylonia. In the process of settling on the land, the people tried to build a city and a tower (Genesis 11:1-4).
God disrupted the building process of the people because of the attempt to build a tower “whose top may reach unto heaven”. Building the city of Babel itself may not have been what attracted God’s judgement. The top of the tower was dedicated to the heavens. In this idolatrous and demonic gesture, they might have placed the god Bel-Merodach and the signs of Zodiac in the form of idols on the top platform and worshipped them (Job 38:31-33). The bodies in the heavens are believed to have power over the earth.
King Solomon on the other hand dedicated the temple to the God of Heaven (2 Chronicles 6:1-2, 7:1-4). Believers should not complete buildings and rush in to occupy without dedicating the buildings to God. Commit your buildings to God and let His presence dwell in there.
Prayer:
Pray and dedicate everything you own to God.
