Month Theme: Supernaturality
Topic: Believe God’s Prophets
Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 29:1-28
Main Text:
Jeremiah 29:28
28 For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
Having possessions and blessings normally comes after the period of captivity. However, in some situations God empowers His people to prosper in captivity. The prophet Jeremiah prophesied to the people of Israel that they would be in the Babylonian captivity for long (Jeremiah 29:4-7, 28). He admonished them to buy lands and live normally. He charged them to raise families and cultivate the land. They were not to place their lives on hold because of the captivity.
This scenario reminds me about the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. It is quite satisfying to see the world resist the threat the pandemic is posing to the world and the Church. It wants us quarantined, isolated and practising social distancing but human beings are opposing it. Jeremiah was specific in his declaration that the Jews would be in the Babylonian captivity for seventy years but not two years as the false prophet Hananiah had prophesied (Jeremiah 29:9-14).
In times of crises, true prophets are the conduits through whom God communicates His plans of deliverance. Faith in God and the words of His prophets establish His people and bring them prosperity. The prophetic voice of Jehoshaphat for God’s people to believe in Him and His prophets so they will be established and prosper is as crucial today as it was in the biblical days (2 Chronicles 20:20). Elisha the prophet prophesied the end of the famine in Samaria (2 Kings 7:1-2).
Prayer:
Pray for the gift of the discernment of spirits to know God’s prophets.
