Topic: The Restored Talents
Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:1-20
Main Text:
Matthew 25:20
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
It is godly for believers to see themselves as stewards or servants responsible for God’s ministry or other people’s affairs.
However, it is wrong when we never see ourselves as lords. Traditionally, in the parable of the talents, we consider ourselves as the servants but not the lord (Matthew 25:14-19). In this devotional, I want you to be revolutionary enough to see yourself as the lord but not the servant.
Someone is rather working for you. What you commit to others will multiply. Someone is working for you and will bring you results or dividends. The lord delivered five talents to his servant and he in turn multiplied them (Matthew 25:20-21).
1. Receiving
The servant received what the lord gave him. May they receive the Word you preach, instructions you give, money you give but not reject them.
2. Restoration
The servant brought back or restored what he had received. He did not run away with it.
3. Reproduction
The servant gained other talents – the talents reproduced more talents. They did not diminish or remain the same.
A talent is not little money or only a spiritual gift as many think. Two schools of thought:
1. As a unit of currency, a talent was worth about 6,000 denarii. A denarius was the usual payment for a day's labour. At one denarius per day, a single talent was therefore worth 16 years of labor. Eg. In Ghana, GHC 12,000 x 16 = 192,000 at 1000 per month.
2. If one gram of gold costs about $38. At this price, a talent (33 kg) would be worth about $1,254,000.00.
The lazy servant buried 16 years of labour, Ghc. 192,000 or 1.2 million dollars in the ground, hence the use of the term wicked on him. You don’t have a wicked and slothful servant but a good and faithful servant.
Prayer: Pray that the Holy Ghost will guide you not to put what you have into the hands of a wicked and unfaithful person.
