Month Theme: The Sons of Oil
Topic: Levels of Sonship – Teknon
Scripture Reading: John 1:1-16
Main Text:
John 1:12
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
The third Greek word for sonship is teknon. It is generally used for a natural child of parents regardless of sex, whether male or female. In the natural sense, the TEKNON is a teenager. Beginning at the age of 12-13 until approximately 25-30 years old (when a son could assume his father’s business), a TEKNON was a young man who was being trained in his profession.
The teknon stage is a very tricky stage of life. At this level, one may be naturally old enough to believe he or she can handle responsibility, though the person is not ready to handle blessings and responsibilities. Many people either destroy themselves through poor choices, or stagnate at the teknon level. It is also a time when the rebelliousness of youth shows up.
The word teknon, apart from being used for a natural child of parents, places emphasis on identity and relationship. As believers, we are not natural children of God. He gave us power to become His children. Those who are born of God, are the sons of God (John 1:12-13). The Spirit bears witness that we are the children of God (Romans 8:15-16). Unfortunately, many believers don’t have the identity of the person they call their father. Some professing Christians do not look anything like Christ. There are apprentices who do not have the genuineness and seriousness of the people they’re learning from. As children of God, we cannot grow beyond the teknon stage through declaration. We must have a relationship with God and carry His identify.
Prayer: Pray for the grace and wisdom to execute responsibilities and assignments to perfection.
