Month Theme: Let Brotherly Love Continue
Topic: Overcoming Adversity through Love
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:1-9
Main Text:
Hebrews 13:5
5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Brotherly love must continue in these times in which many are abused and mistreated (Hebrews 13:1-3). People overcome adversity or abuse by we loving them as if we are the ones being abused. There are two ways in which we respond to those who are abused, mistreated or unfortunate:
1. Mourning with them
2. Moving them up.
Many people respond to those whom they love by mourning with them. They sink with them. They empathise with them. They descend into the pit with them. But these are not enough. We are to remember those who are in adversity as if we are the ones suffering. We don’t do this by mourning or crying. We do everything possible to come out.
We demonstrate love by supporting those who cannot help themselves to move up to where we are. David and Jonathan loved each other (1 Samuel 18:3). Jonathan did not see David as a competitor. Rather, he saw him as a brother and legitimate heir to the throne (1 Samuel 23:16-17). David overcame the adversity of being pursued by Saul because Jonathan loved him. Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth also overcame adversity because David loved Jonathan (2 Samuel 9:3-5).
Prayer: Pray for someone going through some form of adversity that God will deliver them.
