Zechariah 4:14
14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.
Zechariah 4:14 reveals two “anointed ones” who stand by the Lord of the whole earth. They were two anointed individuals whom God anointed to stand by Him to minister to Him and for Him. The words “anointed ones” are taken from two Hebrew words, yiṣhār, which means oil (which produces light) and bēn which means a son who is the builder of the family name respectively. The term, “anointed ones” therefore, literally means “SONS OF OIL”. The Amplified Bible uses the term “sons of oil” to describe the two anointed ones.
In line with the Hebrew understanding that the word “son” does not only refer to offspring but character and works (refer to previous devotionals), the anointed ones or sons of oil are people who bear the characteristics and power of oil. Sons of oil are born of oil; they have the nature and power of oil. They minister to produce the effect of oil.
Believers appreciate their status as the sons of God but we should also understand that we are “the sons of oil”. We are “born of water” and “of the Spirit” (John 3:5-6). In other words, we are “the sons of water” and “sons of the Spirit”. The anointing is the power of the Holy Ghost. Oil is a symbol of the anointing in the Bible. If believers are born of the Holy Ghost, it implies that they are the sons of oil as we observed in the book of Zechariah.
