As mentioned in yesterday’s devotional, the issue of sonship or daughterhood is one of the most pressing needs of humankind. It defines our identity, nature and ability. Knowing one’s identity brings confidence and inspiration. “sons” in the generic sense in our context describes both sons and daughters of God. It refers to individuals with divine or spiritual virtues like consolation, peace and passion.
“The Sons of Oil”, refers to “sons” who have the characteristics of oil. The term refers to those who personify the anointing. Sons of oil exhibit the nature and power of the oil of the Holy Ghost. The word “son” refers to offspring as well as character and works. In Hebrew thinking, sonship is assigned to people who are rich in godly virtues. A consoling man is called a son of consolation, a peaceful man is called a son of peace and a God – like person is called a son of God. Other uses of the word “son” or “sons” will help us understand the power of sonship. The book of Kings mentions the sons of Belial who compromised with King Ahab and Jezebel to kill Naboth.
The word “son” in 1 Kings 21:8-10 – an Old Testament reference – is the Hebrew word, ‘bÄ“n’ which means a son, children or builder of a family name. The word “Belial” in 1 Kings 21:10 is the word, ‘belîyaÊ¿al’ which means wickedness, ungodly, without profit and worthlessness. The term, “sons of Belial”, therefore means “sons of wickedness” or “sons of worthlessness”. The sons of Belial were the embodiment of wickedness and worthlessness. Wickedness and worthlessness literally produced the sons of Belial and they had the character of wickedness and worthlessness in a complete manner. They were the personification of wickedness and worthlessness. The sons of Belial can be contrasted with the sons of godly virtues like the sons of peace. In line with the Hebrew understanding that the word “son” does not only refer to offspring but character and works.
Prayer: Pray and declare that no negative trait of your earthly parents will show up in you because you are born of God.
