But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son (huios), made of a woman, made under the law,
The fourth Greek word is “huios”, (hwee-os’).
The word, huios, refers to a male child. It is also used in the general sense with reference to the descendants of the lineage of an individual (Galatians 4:1-7). The apostles James and John are called the sons (male children) of thunder (Mark 3:17). Huios refers to the child who has been marked as someone’s son/daughter because of the similarity between the parents and the child (Romans 8:14). It is the similarity of facial features, character, and attitude.
To be a huios, does not automatically happen. To become one, we need discipline and obedience. These are people who are able to withstand suffering and temptation, to accomplish God’s purpose for their lives. Jesus Christ, being a Huios, learned obedience through the things He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). Those who revere God as their father, the pious worshippers of God, those who in character and life resemble God, those who are governed by the Spirit of God, repose the same calm and joyful trust in God which children do in their parents and hereafter in the blessedness and glory of life eternal will openly wear this dignity of the sons of God.
The term is used preeminently of Jesus Christ, as enjoying the supreme love of God, united to Him in affectionate intimacy, privy to His saving councils, obedient to the Father’s will in all His acts. Christian babes – nepios, paidion and teknons – can’t deal with the challenges in the world. The expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the huios of God (Romans 8:17-19).
Prayer: Ask God for the grace to walk in obedience and discipline, as a son or daughter of God.
