Month Theme: The Sons of Oil
Topic: Civil Power has a Mandate
Scripture Reading: Zechariah 4:12-14
Main Text:
Zechariah 4:14
14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.
Both Joshua and Zerubbabel stood by the Lord of the whole earth (Zechariah 4:13-14). It is easy to understand that a person with ecclesiastical power who stands by the Lord of the whole earth is anointed. However, it is difficult to appreciate the anointing on a person who does the things we consider to be secular. Civil power stands by the Lord of the whole earth and is anointed as much as ecclesiastical power.
God chose Joshua to stand by Him to minister to Him and for Him. Zerubbabel was equally positioned by the Lord of the whole earth. He was mandated to build the temple. He created the environment and platform for Joshua the high priest to minister to the Lord and for the Lord. It is not far-fetched to say that without Zerubbabel, Joshua’s ministry would not have been possible. Civil power provided the platform for the manifestation of ecclesiastical power. Civil power provided governance for the people, generated the resources to build the temple and gave leadership to the builders of the temple.
The prophet Zechariah made it clear that Zerubbabel’s civil power was spiritual in nature (Zechariah 4:6-9). It was not natural ability. God’s grace was upon him and this grace propelled him to fulfil his mission.
Prayer: Pray for Christians in secular positions, Christian businesses and business people that they’ll receive a revelation of their mandate from God.
